An infinity pool, also called a vanishing edge, negative edge or zero edge pool, is a swimming pool where water flows over one or more walls so the surface appears to merge with the horizon behind it. The water is not lost: it spills across a weir wall into a hidden catch basin below, where a pump returns it to the pool through the filtration system in a continuous loop.
In Dubai, an infinity swimming pool works hardest where there is a view to borrow, a sea line on Palm Jumeirah, a skyline in Downtown Dubai, a marina channel in Dubai Marina, or a golf fairway in Emirates Hills. Getting it right is a structural job first and a finish job second: the weir must be dead level within a few millimetres, the catch basin must be sized for surge, and the whole assembly must survive 48 °C summers, salt-laden air and high evaporation.
Why this pool type suits Dubai
Dubai plots are tight, elevations are dramatic and the good views sit on one side of the plot. A vanishing edge pool turns that single good side into the whole experience: instead of a coping line cutting across the horizon, the water reads as a continuous plane out to the sea, the creek or the towers.
The mechanics
Every vanishing edge pool is really two bodies of water working together. Understanding the parts explains where budgets go, and why a badly built edge shows a wet, streaky wall instead of a clean sheet of water.
Choosing an edge
The right edge depends on your view, your levels and how the pool sits in the landscape. These are the configurations we build most often in Dubai villas and penthouses.
One wall spills toward the view; the other three are standard skimmer walls. The classic, most cost-effective infinity pool and the right choice when the view sits on one side only.
Water spills over all four sides into a slot channel, producing a mirror-flat sheet with no visible coping line. The most architectural option, and the least forgiving of construction tolerances.
Two adjoining walls spill, wrapping the view around a corner. Common where a plot faces both a sea line and a garden, or on corner units with dual aspects.
Engineered against the building's structural capacity, with lightweight shells, full tanking and drainage redundancy. Built for penthouses and podium terraces where every kilogram is calculated.
An acrylic or structural glass panel replaces part of the spill wall, so the water body is visible from below or from the lounge. A statement feature for elevated terraces.
A raised jacuzzi cascades into the main pool, which then spills over its own vanishing edge, two water sounds, one circulation system, shared heating and chilling.

Podium terraces and penthouses looking toward Burj Khalifa. Work is dictated by structural load limits, crane and lift access, and building management approvals — we handle drawings, method statements and out-of-hours logistics.
High-rise terraces above the marina channel and JBR. Wind uplift at height affects spill behaviour, so we specify slower weir flow, wind-tolerant edge detailing and enclosed basins to limit splash loss.
Generous plots with natural falls toward the fairway. Ideal for long single-edge spills, sunken seating and a raised spa, with planting layered below the edge so the water reads as continuous green-to-blue.

From first visit to first swim
A clear sequence, fixed milestones and one project manager you can call. Most private villa projects run 6 to 14 weeks on site, depending on size, finish and approvals.
We visit, take levels, check the soil report, water table and access route, and stand where you will sit, because eye level decides where the edge goes.
Concept layout, edge type, shell dimensions, finish samples and a 3D render so you can see the horizon line before anything is excavated.
Structural calculations, MEP layout, hydraulic sizing of the catch basin and balance tank, plus Dubai Municipality and community or developer NOC submissions.
Dig, steel fixing, shuttering, then reinforced concrete or shotcrete. The weir wall is set and laser-checked at this stage, this is where the edge is won or lost.
Tanking membrane, leak testing under water load, then plumbing, pumps, filtration, heating or chilling, lighting conduits and automation cabling.
Glass mosaic, porcelain or quartz interior, coping stone, deck paving, planting and the visible edge detail people will photograph.
Fill, balance the water chemistry, tune the spill sheet, snag list, a walkthrough of the controls, documentation and warranty, then an optional maintenance plan.

Living with it
Heat, dust and evaporation are the three forces working against any outdoor pool here. A vanishing edge handles surface debris well but needs its own routine.
Summer evaporation drops levels fast. An auto-fill valve keeps the weir sheeting evenly and stops the edge pump running dry. Check it monthly.
Calcium and dust build on the spill lip and break the sheet into streaks. A soft brush weekly and a descale a few times a year keeps the edge crisp.
Dubai's water is mineral-rich. Keeping calcium hardness and pH in range protects tile, grout and equipment from scaling.
In July a pool can reach bath temperature. A reversible heat pump chills in summer and heats in winter for genuine year-round swimming.
During dusty winds, run circulation longer and backwash more often. The overflow does most of the surface skimming for you.
The edge pump works whenever the effect is on. Include it in every service visit — it is the part most often forgotten by generalist cleaners.
Answers
No. The water spilling over the edge falls into a concealed catch basin and is pumped straight back into the pool. The only real losses are evaporation and splash-out, which any pool in Dubai has. An auto-fill valve replaces them automatically.
A compact single-edge villa pool typically starts around AED 140,000, a standard 8 × 4 m infinity swimming pool from about AED 210,000, and a four-sided perimeter overflow from roughly AED 420,000. Expect a 20–40% premium over a standard skimmer pool of the same size because of the extra structure, catch basin and second pump. We confirm a fixed price after the site survey.
Most private villa infinity pools take 6 to 14 weeks on site, plus 2 to 4 weeks for design, engineering and approvals beforehand. Rooftop and glass-walled projects take longer because of structural sign-off and panel lead times.
Yes, if the structure allows it. We start with the building's structural drawings and load capacity, then design a shell, tanking system and drainage strategy to suit — often using lighter construction methods. Building management and authority approvals are part of our scope.
They are as safe as any pool when detailed properly. The edge itself is a wall, not an open drop — water simply flows over it into a basin below. We add non-slip steps, clear depth markings, anti-entrapment drain covers, and can include removable safety fencing or an automatic cover.
An infinity pool spills over one or two walls to create a vanishing horizon effect, usually facing a view. An overflow or perimeter pool spills over every side into a narrow slot channel, giving a level, mirror-like surface with no visible coping. The perimeter version needs a larger balance tank and tighter construction tolerances.
Yes. Private pools require authority approval, and most gated communities and developers also require an NOC before work starts. We prepare drawings, structural calculations and method statements and manage the submissions as part of the project.

Less than most people expect, provided it is specified correctly. A variable-speed edge pump can run the spill effect at a low setting for daily use and step up when you are entertaining. Many owners run the effect only during the hours they use the garden.
