What is an overflow swimming pool?
An overflow swimming pool is designed so water spills over one, two, three or all four edges into a hidden gutter instead of stopping below a tiled waterline. The overflow drains into a balancing tank, gets filtered, and is pumped straight back in, which is why the surface always sits brim-full and level with the coping or the horizon beyond it.
- Also known as vanishing-edge, infinity-edge, negative-edge or deck-level pools, depending on how many sides overflow
- The water surface sits flush with the deck rather than 10–15cm below it, as in a standard skimmer pool
- Debris, sunscreen film and surface heat are carried off continuously rather than pulled in through side skimmers

Why the waterline never drops below the deck
In a conventional skimmer pool, the water level sits a little below the coping, and wall-mounted skimmer boxes pull surface debris toward a filter. It works, but the drop-away waterline breaks the visual line between pool and terrace.
An overflow pool removes that gap. The shell is built with the top edge open to a narrow channel, the overflow gutter, running along the sides that are designed to spill. Water is pumped in slightly faster than it's needed, so it constantly trickles over the edge, down the gutter, and into an underground balancing tank before returning through the filtration line. The result is a pool that reads as one continuous sheet of water, right up to the deck or the edge of the villa's view.
It's a structural decision, not a finishing touch, the overflow system, catch basin and balancing tank all need to be planned into the pool's engineering from day one, which is why overflow pools are usually specified at the design stage rather than added as an afterthought.
Types of overflow pools we design for Dubai villas
Every overflow pool works on the same principle, a spilling edge feeding a hidden gutter, but which sides overflow, and how the edge is detailed, changes the whole feel of the pool.
Infinity / Vanishing Edge
One edge overflows toward a view, so the waterline appears to merge with the horizon or the landscape beyond it. Best suited to plots with an open outlook.
Deck-Level (Perimeter)
Water overflows evenly on all sides at deck height, so the pool sits flush with the surrounding terrace from every angle. A popular choice for compact villa gardens.
Negative Edge
A close variant of the infinity edge, built with a slightly wider catch basin and a false lower wall, often used where the drop beyond the edge is steep or dramatic.
Two & Three-Sided Overflow
Only the sides that face a garden, a seating deck or a neighbouring wall overflow, keeping the remaining edges as a standard raised bond beam. A middle ground on cost and complexity.
How the overflow system actually moves water
Water spills over the chosen edge
The pool is filled slightly above the coping line, so a thin, continuous sheet of water spills over the designated edge or edges rather than staying contained below the tile.
It's caught in a hidden gutter
A narrow channel, the overflow gutter, runs beneath the coping along every spilling edge and carries the water away from view, taking surface leaves, dust and sunscreen film with it.
It settles in the balancing tank
Gutter water drains into an underground balancing tank, which absorbs the volume that would otherwise cause splash-out, and keeps the pump fed even as the water level shifts.
It's filtered and returned
From the balancing tank, water is drawn through the filtration and treatment line as normal, then pumped back into the pool floor or walls to keep the overflow running continuously.

What to think through before you build
01 Coping & edge material
The overflow edge takes constant water contact and full Dubai sun, so natural stone or porcelain coping rated for pool use and UV exposure holds up better than softer finishes long-term.
02 Mosaic & tile finish
Glass or ceramic mosaic tiling is the usual finish for the pool interior and gutter, chosen for chemical resistance as much as colour, darker tones read as a deeper, more mirror-like surface.
03 Balancing tank sizing
The tank has to be sized for the pool's overflow volume, not just its total capacity, so it doesn't overflow itself during heavy villa use or a sudden rain event.
04 Water treatment
Higher evaporation and constant surface turnover in Dubai's heat mean the dosing and filtration setup for an overflow pool is usually sized a step above a standard skimmer pool.
05 Lighting & water features
Because the edge is a visual focal point, LED edge lighting, spillway jets or a raised water feature are commonly integrated into the overflow design rather than added afterward.
06 Structural placement
Overflow pools are easiest to build into a new villa pool or a full renovation, since the gutter, tank and shell need to be engineered together from the start.

How much maintenance does an overflow pool need?
Overflow pools have one extra component to maintain compared with a skimmer pool: the balancing tank and gutter system, which needs periodic cleaning so it doesn't silt up. In exchange, the visible pool surface generally stays cleaner day to day because debris is carried off the top continuously.
Can an overflow pool be added to an existing villa?
It depends on the existing structure. Converting a skimmer pool to overflow usually means rebuilding the shell and adding a balancing tank, so it's more practical during a full pool renovation than as a small retrofit. A site visit is the fastest way to confirm what your villa's layout allows.
